Lake District Boating

Lake District Sailing on Windermere is the perfect place to get afloat during your holiday in the Lake District.

Simply stroll down to the lakeside at Bowness-on-Windermere and book yourself a boat trip - there's plenty of choice. You can enjoy a relaxing ride on a skippered cruise, or take the controls yourself on a motor launch or rowing boat. Advance booking is not generally necessary, but should you want to arrange your cruise in advance, use the links on the left to find contact details for sailing businesses around Windermere.

The lake also supports many resident boats, sailing craft and motorboats alike. Full facilities are available. Boating on Windermere has been in the news recently after the imposition of a 10mph speed limit. Although many powerboat owners have fiercely contested the limit, the result is a lake which is now even more welcoming for the first-time boater.

There is one more way to get afloat which attracts thousands every year - the car ferry from Bowness across to Far Sawrey.

Lake District Sailing at Coniston water include:

  • Eat in the Bluebird Cafe
  • Take the Coniston Launch or the steam yacht Gondola for a trip to Brantwood (home of John Ruskin) or just tour around the lake.
