Workington is an ancient market, industrial and port town at the mouth of the River Derwent on the west coast of Cumbria. It is 7 miles (11.3 km) west of Cockermouth and 5 miles (8.0 km) southwest of Maryport.

Parts of the town north of the river date from Roman times. During the 18th century, the exploitation of the local iron ore and coal led to the town becoming a major industrial town and port. Iron and steel working was important in Workington. It was here that Henry Bessemer introduced his revolutionary steel making process using the Bessemer Converter. Steel making finally ended in 2006. Recently the town has diversified into other forms of industry.

The town is liberally supplied with a range of hotels, inns, bed and breakfast (b&b) accommodation and guesthouses, in the town or within a few miles.
